I want to discuss every available information about monk dps, both in current and in next patch.
I will discuss the relevant skill and talent changes comming next patch and will introduce some of the more interesting new gear
pieces and set bonuses.
Patch changes
- Mastery will be redesigned. Rather than giving us a boost when consuming tigereye brew stacks,
mastery will give us a chance of generating an extra TeB stack each time we get one (similar to the t15 4p bonus).
This will render the effect of the RoRo-trinket pointless.
-TeB stacks will generate after every four chi points used (up from three).
This means we will have to consume 33% more chi to generate the same amount of TeB stacks.
This will be evened out by the new mastery system though.
-Consuming 10 TeB stacks will now increase you damage done by 60% (down from 90% earlier in the ptr and definitely down from the 190% RoRo procs)
This is definitely a nerf compared to 5.3 but we will come to that later
-Chi brew is a new talent and will be at least as good as Ascension in patch 5.4 if not better. CB will give you 2 chi points + 2 TeB stacks instantly. CB has 2 charges, like roll does, and has a 45 sec cooldown. This talent will enable a huge dps burst at the start of an encounter and prelimenary ptr testing has shown that in combination with enough mastery, it will enable us to keep an 100% uptime on the TeB buff.
-Some PTR testing has shown that Xuen does significantly more damage, although this is not mentioned anywhere in the patch notes.
-Zen sphere does 15% more healing and damage, but Chi Wave will still be better for dps purposes.
-Rushing jade wind has been redesigned. RJW replaces your spinning crane kick with an instant cast tornade which lasts for 6 seconds doing 60% of spinning crane kick damage but allows you to keep using skills in the meantime. This is an insane talent for both WW and Brewmaster monks in aoe heavy fights.
There are a couple more glyphs and talent changes, but none of them are relevant to WW monks.
Set bonuses
The new WW monk t16 bonuses are as follows:
t16 2p: Combo Breaker: Tiger Palm increases the damage of Tiger Palm by 40%. Combo Breaker: Blackout Kick increases the damage of Blackout Kick by 40%.
This will result in an overall dps increase of about 3% and will mainly prioritze combo breakers when they pop up in the rotation.
t16 4p: Every 10 stacks of Tigereye Brew consumed cause your next Rising Sun Kick, Blackout Kick, or Fists of Fury to consume 1 less Chi.
This means you will get 1 free chi point every 10 TeB consumed (= 40 chi used (minus all the free TeB stacks you got from mastery)). this is not alot of chi gain per chi spent, but it will allow the use of a skill where you lack one chi for, so it saves using an extra jab.
Trinket: Assurance of Consequence
ptr.wowhead.com/item=102292
Equip: Increases the cooldown recovery rate of six of your major abilities by 39%. Effective for Agility-based damage roles only.
Equip: Your attacks have a chance to grant you 11761 Agility for 20 sec. (15% chance, 115 sec cooldown)
This is one of the most interesting trinkets to get in 5.4 as a WW monk. It will reduce our cooldown of Fists of Fury from 25 seconds to 17 seconds, making it useable way more often. Therefor FoF will become the most important skill when obtaining this trinket. Especially during single target encounters u will be spending 3 out of 17 seconds standing still during FoF to put out the max dps on a single target. This is mainly bad news considering monks were huge on moveability in the previours patches.
Trinket: Haromm's Talisman
ptr.wowhead.com/item=102301
Equip: Your attacks have a 14 % chance to trigger Multistrike, which deals instant additional damage to your target equal to 33% of the original damage dealt.
Equip: Your attacks have a chance to grant you 11761 Agility for 10 sec. (Approximately 0.92 procs per minute)
This trinket has giving me some interesting results so far on the ptr, especially in combination with the AoC trinket. Using loads of FoF in a fight will result into higher Multistrike dmg procs from the HT trinket, seeing up to 7% increased dmg done on static fights. When used without the AoC trinket and with a haste heavy build, this trinket will result in an average of about 3,2% increased dmg done.
Builds
At the moment four available builds are being tested with the highest potential, these are:
T15 Haste/Ascension
This is a haste heavy build, with Haste -> Crit -> Mastery stat prio, resulting in high chi generation ->high TeB stack generation and with t15 4p, you won't need mastery. The T15 4p bonus is now the similar to the 5.3 mastery: Each TeB stack consumed will give you 0,5% more damage done (10x = 5% more damage). Also the usage of RJW is being optimized, this build is amazing for aoe heavy fights.
T15 Crit/Chi Brew
Crit will theoratically be the highest dps increasing stat next patch, not considering any set bonuses or talent usage. This build focuses on heavy Crit in combination with high mastery and barely any haste, meaning about 18k crit, 8k mastery 4-5k haste. With the CB talent, enough mastery and t15 4p you will have a 80-100% up time on TeB buff and with the massive amounts of crit you will be able to put that TeB buff to max use.
T16 Haste/Ascension/AOC
This haste heavy build in combination with Ascension is focused to building up TeB stacks purely through massive amounts of jab and blackout kick spam, also the haste heavy results in in ultra fast FoF which is movement-friendly. Also the new RJW talent requires alot of energy to be kept up, especially during AOE-heavy fights so both haste heavy and ascension will be prio during those fights. A high amount of mastery in this build is advised though.
T16 Crit/Chi Brew/AOC
This will probably the highest dps spec for single target. With crit being the best dps stat and FoF our highest single target dps spell, in combination with the AoC trinket, this will result in the highest dps output. Chi brew is going to be the favorite talent for single target dps encounters as well. The high amount of FoF usage is going to slow monks down alot, but when timed properly it will result in a high dps output. The stat prio would be Crit -> Mastery -> haste. This build does not allow the usage of RJW though, so it will not compete in aoe heavy fights.
My estimation is that a haste-heavy build will result in about 4-5% lower dps on single target than the Crit/AoC builds, but the haste build will be usable in all the new encounters while the Crit/AoC build will only be useful in single target encounters. Next to that i am interested to see what the T15 Crit heavy build testing will bring for results, because i am not to keen about the new T16 4P bonus, although i might underestemate its value in haste heavy builds.
